Does anyone know of a good and cheap dedicated server? or any suggestion of using your own PC as a server.
Was thinking of buying a high spec PC and installing wampserver on it, do you recon it will be a good idea? instead of buying expensive dedicated server
cheers

Depends on your own upload speed and the size of site you're trying to run. I personally would go in this order:

Small site -> shared hosting account
Medium -> VPS hosting
Large -> dedicated server

I would avoid your own pc as to be honest it would be crippled by your upload speed, plus you'll have to leave it on 24/7. You would also need to check if your provider provides a static IP (unless you plan to use a seperate application that updates a service online directing traffic to the dynamic ip adress) and by using your computer wouldnt be a break in their terms and conditions of service.

Best of luck!

Definitely not your own PC. Not only does it have to be on 24/7, but you'll have to rely on your power and internet company not going out which isn't good in my area. If you have a good dedicated server company, they will have things like anti-earthquake rooms, 24/7 monitoring, etc that you just can't do at home.

I wouldn't suggest a cheap dedicated server though, because you probably won't be happy with it. You get what you pay for. Look around for a nice dedicated server that is on sale. You can get something pretty good for $99/mo if it's on sale.

Thanks guys,
Am currently on a shared hosting, my site is still under development phase. Guess when it starts to get its peak then will move to dedicated hosting.
Any reviews about godaddy?
thanks

Snaiker honestly mate I dont think you need a Dedicated server at all! Check out VPS's packages or the New Cloud packages offered at Krypt.com.

I am on Krypt Cloud 1000Mhz Burstable to 2Ghz, 4GB RAM Burstable 8GB for $80 per month running two highly trafficked forums.

Thanks FNezovic,
Whats the total number of users on your site and how much bandwidth/disk space you using? Krypt seems like a good provider, how are they interms of support? and are you having cpanel?
Cheers

http://nearlyfreespeech.net charges based on bandwidth, had good experience with them. No cpanel so make sure you know what you're doing if you use them.

Right now I have 405 users online at 8AM. Their support is unmatched. Their ticketing system is great and they always reply within 5 minutes, often sooner. The longest time I had to wait was 20 minutes but this was on New Years day last year.

I'm running on a VPS with 512MB RAM and Drupal 6.20 installed. No problem with authenticating users when arrowchat is disabled. However, if I turn on arrowchat, then I top out at about 6 users before performance (drupal login and arrochat) becomes very sluggish (>30 seconds to login). Is there a minimum RAM config I should have with my VPS? I need to be able to support up to 100 simultaneous users.
