Emojis showing a "?"

This issue started on 3.x. We did an upgrade but we still see it on 4.1.1. The emoji shows fine when it is just dropped on a chat/room. But if you close and reopen the convo each emoji shows as a "?" (question mark) instead of an icon.

We figured it out... the tables holding messages need to have the collation set to utf8mb4_unicode_ci
