Carriage returns in messages

Users are copy pasting from various sources. The carriage returns do not work for most cases.

Even if a message is formatted say in a Notepad++ editor first , the message seems to be delivered correct formatting, but the text lists lose all carriage returns subsequently, when user re-login or traverses back and forth between chats or reload of browser.

Please advise, as many users need to copy paste text messages that are lists.

We have used it with Joomla.
