Online count on initial load

On my JomSocial site, when someone first logs in, Arrowchat displays the correct number of logged in users just fine. But if another friend logs in, it never updates the online count unless I click the Chat button to refresh my buddy list. Once that has been done, it will continue to keep the correct count (Even without displaying my buddy list) until I refresh the page or move to another page.
Would this have something to do with the buddy list not actually being loaded until it is opened? It appears that once it's opened, it will keep count properly.

Correct, the buddylist is not loaded until clicked. This is one way that we were able to keep server resources down.

So is it not possible then to at least keep a count without having to click? I suppose the list would have to be loaded without clicking to achieve that...
How about making it an option in the admin area and give us the ability to switch it on or off depending on our needs?

If you do have that feature make sure that you put warnings as to let people know that it will raise the server load exponentially...

I don't care if it loads the whole buddy list initially. I'd just like for it to be able to keep a running tally of the number of online users without having to click to open it.
i.e. if I log in with 0 users online and I don't refresh the page, I'd like to know if 2 friends login without having to click the buddylist to get a new count.
Once I click the list once, it keeps up with it just fine. Just not on the initial page load.

+1 on that.
Why would a user even bother to click it if it reads 0.

And why would a customer (you) not even bother to download the last version to see it's already implemented? :)

Because I have had major problems with the versions prior to this and after much frustration had to switch back to cometchat.
I keep scanning the forums to be sure that it is working properly before I will try to implement it again.
I do believe in the end it will be a superior product, but it needs it to at least stable and have the silly glitches worked out.

It's actually listed in the release notes for the latest version. So far it's working great for me. 0.1.31 is supposed to have a few more bug fixes, then they're working on 0.2 for added features.
