Wow...it is really hard to determine who wrote what if they do not change their Avatar...as most members do not....With that said, I would like to suggest the ability of the Admin to assign color for text on replies in one on one chat.

As for multichat...maybe a tabless css border?

It's been suggest many times before and it will probably implemented at some point.

I would suggest disabling avatars (done through the admin panel) on any site where most users do not have pictures. Alternatively, you could default the "Show Names Only" to on and have users uncheck it if they wish to view avatars.
