Long-Polling advice

This is probably a stupid question but here goes:

My site seems to work ok whether or not I check the disable long polling option. But I'm curious: if you are telling people to disable long polling (by checking that box) if they are having performance issues, doesn't that mean that keeping long polling turned on (not checking the box) hurts performance and is always bad? What's the downside to checking the box and disabling long polling? :?

Long-polling in theory is better but most sites have experienced worse performance with it (some better). We'll be removing the option soon on our standard license which will also make installation easier.
