Wordpress Multi-word usernames only show first word in chat

I have users with names like "The Smart Elephant". In the embedded chatroom, the BuddyList shows them correctly, truncating them with "..." if they get too long. But in the chatroom itself, the name shows up as only the first word, like "The". The workaround someone found was to change their nickname to use underscores, like "The_Happy_Elephant" (hyphens didn't work they said). But that makes little sense. What do I need to change so my users don't have to do this?
