How do I troubleshoot lag?

I installed arrowchat for Jomsocial on a fairly powerful server so I thought I'd just let the server run the software. Pretty soon the lag was impossible to deal with. I bought monthly membership to a push server, put the API into the admin area and, same thing, the chat started to lag down to sometimes 7 minutes between posts. This was with less than 10 people talking. What should I do to troubleshoot this? I used to have envolve chat on the same domain with zero lag.
