Preserve animation/transparency in in-chat image previews

Images show up directly in chat windows (great!) but their thumbnails are converted to .jpg (at least in my installation) meaning .gifs are not animated and .pngs lose their transparency (often resulting in a black or weird background color.) Would it be possible to have an option to preserve these file formats (leave .gif as-is if under X size, otherwise convert to one-frame .gif, scale .png down to .png to preserve transparency) so the previews aren't ugly?

While this is a good idea, there are a lot of technical reasons for the JPG conversion. This might change in the future, though.
