URL shortening service

I think an URL shortening service like tinyurl (or other) would be nice to have when posting long urls as the chat window is small. I don't know what's better: to do the job automatically or let the user do that on its own by using a little tool.

Maybe because of performance and an extra request it's better to use a php str_replace to shorten the link?? What do you think?
